your chance to learn about
wine blending and create your
own Ameritage from five different Bordeaux varietals. On August 2nd, our winemaker
will taste each creation and decide
which is closest to his idea of a fantastic Ameritage. That blend will
be used for the next vintage with the winner's
name on our
back label alongside our winemaker's name. Along with the wine,
you will receive a t-shirt to commemorate your experience. You may also wish to attend other
unique August and September activities:

Our Process |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
In
the Vineyard: Last month's crazy weather gave us a few
headaches: recent hail caused us to
lose 10% of our crop and required
extra shoot positioning to protect our grapes from the sun. Luckily,
the natural process of veraison,
or
sweetening of
the grapes, had not yet begun so grape
quality was maintained.
When you visit Pearmund Cellars this month,
pay particular attention to our grapes, and note their color changing
from green to gold. That's an indication that the 2008 harvest and
crush
season is almost upon us. In
the Winery: Chris, D. J., and others are busy preparing
our equipment and facilities
for September and October. Our destemmer, press,
tractor, forklift, pump, compressor, barrels, hoses, bins, yeasts, and
cleaning supplies – all have to be ready to go. If you are
interested in learning to use all this equipment and understand when
conditions are right to be begin processing, remember to register for
our Crush Monkey Fridays. You
will go home wet, happy, and full of
wine. |

Our People |

Each
year, Pearmund Cellars is really lucky to have staff and volunteers
with varied agricultural interests
that enhance our property: birds, bees, flowers, and fresh produce, but
no hens, goats, or peacocks this year! We would like to share
some brief notes on their activities:

Our Industry |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
This week, Alexander F. Skirpan Jr.,
a hearing examiner with the State
Corporation Commission, endorsed Dominion Virginia Power's $243 million
plan to string high voltage cables along 65-miles of rural and
suburban Northern Virginia. Landowners and environmental groups had
spent millions of dollars trying to halt the controversial project,
accusing Dominion of exaggerating the demand for electricity to avoid
the threat of blackouts beginning in 2011. For more information,
read the Washington
Post article. Using a different power source, CorkSavvy created a mobile phone application
that allows wine lovers to snap a
label with their phone cam, email that picture to an address at
CorkSavvy, then upload it into the
Wine Diary in their free CorkSavvy account. As you can see at
the right, it's as easy as
1-2-3. Try it the next time you stop by Pearmund Cellars. Sadly, according to the latest Gallup poll, beer's lead over wine and spirits has exceeded 10% for the first time since 2002, particularly among 30 to 49 year olds who tried wine then shifted back to beer. See the Market Watch article for more details, then bring beer-loving friends to the winery and convert them using your power of persuasion! Last, our webmaster recommends Anu Garg's A.Word.A.Day and its etymology section. The free daily newsletter shares the power of words and is sent to 600,000 linguaphiles in over 200 countries. This week, we learned the history of the word sommelier: "From French sommelier, from somm(er)ier (one charged with transporting supplies), from somier (beast of burden), from somme (burden). From driving a pack animal to drafting wine lists, a sommelier has come a long way. A sommelier is to wine as a cicerone is to beer, though the latter has recently been introduced and is not widespread."Don't you love it when everything ties together and ends on a happy note? Enjoy another month of summer wine as you ponder this! |
