Wining Gold Medas From the Beverage Testing InstituteOur shining stars, Chris Pearmund and D.J. Leffin, have done it again! They won two more medals, but this time they raised the stakes: entering the World Wine Championship sponsored by the Beverage Testing Institute. This international competition is staged so that several varietals are evaluated each month. So far, our 2007 Ameritage Reserve won a Gold (90 points), and our 2007 Ameritage won a Silver (89 points).  Watch for additional awards as our winemakers attempt to expand the eminence and visibility of East Coast wines.
We invite you, our most important critics, to rate our wines as you enjoy our late winter activities:
  • Support Your March Madeness Team at Pearmund CellarsMarch Madness:  Every weekend in March, wear the t-shirt of your March Madness team and receive a $1 discount on a bottle of your favorite varietal.  We'll be following both the men's and women's tournaments so let us see who you want to win. If you select a Cabernet Sauvignon, try it with Lori Tolson's Easy Does It Pot Roast.
  • Adults-Only Chili Night:  For $15, treat your best friends to a bowl of steaming-hot chili and a glass of classic wine at our sister winery on March 13th. Our Process

Bud Break in the Virginia Wine IndustryIn the Vineyard:  Our vines are now naked and waiting for the sun's warmth to initiate bud break. Soon, "bleeding" will occur. That's when water begins to appear at the pruning cuts. Before long, buds will break forth, and new leaves will unfold, signaling the coming of Spring.

In the Winery:  On March 10th, we are bottling our 2008 Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Riesling. Both varietals should be delicious, and we cannot wait to see what you think of our new vintages!  We know that many of you have been waiting patiently for our new Riesling to be released so remember to stop by soon after the 10th.

Our People

Purchase Vinturi Aerator at Pearmund CellarsSue Raiford, our Tasting Room Manager, and her crew of loyal volunteers have a new toy:  a wine aerator called Vinturi Essential. When you visit the winery, ask them to let you experience how it works. You should notice a better bouquet, enhanced flavors, and a smoother finish because the patent-pending aerator draws and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time, allowing your wine to breathe instantly. Be careful, though. You may end up purchasing a Vinturi to replace your time-consuming, cumbersome decanter.

Our Industry

Career Shadowing at Pearmund CellarsWine consumption in the United States is growing rapidly. As a result, wine growing, production, and sales are becoming more prominent careers. Pearmund Cellars' staff members are now participating in a career shadowing program initiated by our local high school. In addition, we have supported case work and surveys for colleges, taught continuing education courses, and even given given educational tours to students from nearby grammar schools. One reason that wineries are popular with educators is that our industry is a reasonably-sized example of  vertical integration that encompasses products and services for both retail and wholesale customers.
