Specifically, the Finger Lakes wines of Dr. Konstantin Frank, without whom there would be no serious wines coming from that region. Born in the Ukraine, he received a Ph.D in viticulture, his thesis on growing the famous Vinifera wines of Europe in cold climates. The secret was in root stock that could thrive in cold weather. Early on, he produced spectacular Rieslings, for which the area is now famous. His son Willy Frank took the winery to the next level, developing excellent sparklers, using the French methode champenoise and the 3 classic French champagne varietals. Willy’s son Frederick has since added a value line, Salmon Run, to the product line, and is about to hand the winery over to his daughter Meaghan Frank, the 4th generation of the family to run the business.

Doug Beakes went to great lengths to obtain these wines, ordering from the winery and arranging them to be picked up and delivered to VA by our own Kim Grunett, who happened to be in the neighborhood. So we will be tasting 10 wines on Fathers Day: whites, reds such as Cab Francs, and sparklers. Doug also plans some brown-bag blind tastings comparing Dr. Frank’s wines with similar German wines. So it will be an interesting and exciting event. Mark your calendar and arrive early to socialize, meet and greet! RSVP Required to
