Zinfandels are a class unto themselves. For many years the mystery grape of California, zinfandel has appeared prominently in blush wines, ports, and even bubblies. But it’s the incarnation as the big boisterous, explosive red wine that has won it the cult following – and the fan club – that it boasts in California and around the country.
Zinfandel came to California during the Gold Rush and found its happy place because it thrived wherever it was planted. Then fine wine was discovered in the Golden State, and vintners pulled out their zin vines to make way for chardonnay and cab.
Today zinfandel is the 3rd most-planted wine grape in California after chard and cab. But only zin can claim a fan club – Zinfandel Aficionados and Producers, or ZAP – dedicated to its enjoyment and propagation, red only, thank you.
Come check out this rouser of a red on Sunday, February 11, as Al Guber (of Wine Jeopardy fame) presents the grape in several of its guises. We bet you will leave counting yourself among its legion of fans.
